The Spins

Listen up!

The Spins is an all vinyl show that features hand picked records from our combined collection. Each week we put together playlists relevant to what’s going on, what’s new, and our mood. We often have guests on our show who also love music! Radio 1190 is part of the University of Colorado and supports local and independent music. We are lucky to have an hour each week to share what we’ve been listening to, so tune in! For details about past shows or future announcements check below.

Wells Fargo - March 24th, 2017

St. Patricks Day - March 17th, 2017

We have wanted to do this show for quite some time now. We dedicated the entire hour to a band called Wells Fargo. Throughout the show we gave a little history and backstory to the group and read from their booklet released within the album. If you’ve never heard of them, you’re not alone. The album called Watch Out! Was created from singles released over four decades ago and has only been available in record form for one year. The group was part of the counterculture rock movement in Zimbabwe during the late 1970’s. For info about how to get this album check out vinylmeplease (not available anywhere else!)

Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone! We had to do some diggin’ to muster up this playlist. Reaching out to friends who have lived abroad in Ireland, are marrying into the Irish culture, and good ol’ Google were all very helpful for the making of this one. All the bands from tonight are either from Ireland or currently popular in Ireland. We had a lot of fun with this one-so take a listen! **We have to admit some of these songs were not played on vinyl**

All songs by Wells Fargo from the album Watch Out!

  • Coming Home
  • Watch Out
  • Love of My Life
  • The Crowd
  • Bump Bump Bump
  • Love is the in Thing
  • Open the Door
  • Shades of Wells Fargo
  • Bwanawe
  • Too Long Away
  • Carrying On

Chronic Air Drumming - March 10th, 2017

Half the hour, half the size - March 3rd, 2017

Not going to lie, this week’s theme stemmed from a real life condition called “CAD“ or chronic air drumming. When Lorde released her new single Green Light this week, I found myself unable to resist the urge to air drum during the chorus. We wanted to come up with a playlist that equally created this feeling for our listeners. Let’s just say we couldn’t NOT start with Phil Collins on this one. Check it out!

This week on The Spins we collected our 7” vinyl and compiled a playlist filled with exclusive released singles, one hit wonders, and obscure numbers. We had to cut our show in ½ but we didn’t want to leave you with nothing! Most of our 7” vinyl has been collected from subscriptions to Vinyl Me Please, Turntable Kitchen, and Joyful Noise Recordings. All of these are AWESOME and worth the $$ because you receive food pairing ideas and recipes, fresh coffee beans, or VIP vinyl pressings. Check out our 30 minute playlist below as well as these vinyl subscriptions.

Coffee House - February 24th, 2017

Break up songs - February 10th, 2017

This playlist comes from the minds of two people who spend copious amounts of time in coffee shops. Pairing music with things like studying or relaxing might be our best quality. Albums like M83, Iron and Wine, and all the way to Vampire Weekend are sure to get you through your daily grind. So whether you’re wishing you were at a coffee shop or needing some chill out music, grab a coffee and take a listen!

Warning: the following playlist may cause feelings of anger, self-blame, relief, shock, denial, happiness, or sadness. Any or all of these things may be how you feel after a breakup with your SO. Since Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, we wanted to do something for all those lonely hearts out there. These are just a few of our picks that emanate “breakup songs”. You may want to keep this list handy to help get ya through some rough patches. Hang in there.

Johnny Cash - February 3rd, 2017

New Year, New Music - January 20th, 2017

The mastermind behind tonight's playlist came solely from Brandon. Having grown up listening to Johnny Cash as a child I had no problem choosing which songs to play. Johnny Cash has had many influences on my life and my style of music. He has inspired me to lpay guitar and sing. The band I'm currently in, Billy has drawn many influences and styles from his outlawish appeal. He was a true legend. This is probably as “Country” as you’ll ever hear us get--so enjoy! God Bless Johnny Cash. As always, thanks for listening.

New Year, New Music. For our first show back @ 1190 we decided to play songs we discovered over Winter break. While some of the songs were newly releases anyways, most were just songs we discovered in our multiple long car rides. That’s right, over break, we managed to drive from Tulsa, OK to San Antonio, TX all the way back to Boulder, CO! Needless to say, we had plenty of time to feed our brains with new tunes. Here is our playlist from 1/20/17. We’d also like to thank our guests Kendra and Emily for joining us and our callers for their requests :). Check it out!
