2017 Bus Contest Proposal
Boulder County received a $100,000 grant from the Regional Air Quality Council to increase transit ridership in Lafayette and reduce air pollution on high ground-level ozone days. Boulder County Transportation looked for innovative ideas from the community on how to structure a fare subsidy program that will increase transit ridership by Lafayette residents and employees.
I used the bus almost everyday when I was going to school at CU-Boulder and decided that this proposal would be a great way to express my gratitude and share how I believe the bus system could be improved.
I first compiled my thoughts by asking my friends on Facebook why they do NOT take the bus and also asked them why they do NOT like to drive. I got some good results.
After looking over these results I found an answer that helped solve most of these issues: Wifi.
There is a company called Cradlepoint which allows buses to have in-transit wifi. The wifi not only provides free high-speed internet to the passengers, but also has the ability to have security cameras hooked up to make the buses more safe, a pay-at-purchase machine so passengers can use their credit cards or Apple Pay, and you can develop a real-time app that allows for a much more accurate schedule and shows where all the buses currently are on a map.
Additionally, the landing page when you log on to the wifi can have advertisements which will generate revenue so the whole system will eventually pay for itself.
My target market for this campaign will be high school/college students and the business class.
Would you rather wait in traffic or watch netflix? Imagine that you are sitting in heavy traffic trying to get home. You pull up behind a bus and see an advertisement right in front of you: "you could be working on that business proposal right now". With wifi on the bus you can get school work, and business work out of the way so you won't have to do it at home and can have more time at home with your family and friends.
If you would like to view the entire proposal and the advertisements please download the zip file here. Thanks!
